Voluntary work at LISTROS

LISTROS is a registered non-profit association located in Berlin and working towards the goal of building bridges between Germany and Ethiopia. The three pillars of LISTROS’ work are art, architecture and exchange/dialogue.

The organization focuses its activities on the “Listros” – literally “shoe polishers” in Amharic – that gave the association its name. They represent all children and young people in Ethiopia who work independently to create the basis for a better future by becoming shoe polishers, fruit vendors, lottery-ticket sellers, knife sharpeners and cattle keepers.

LISTROS is guided by the conviction that confidence in one’s own abilities, acknowledgement of productivity, respect for the entrepreneurial spirit and the support of creative potential can act as engines of change for these young people. Which is why the development of the individual stands at the very heart of all initiatives organized by LISTROS. By making each individual visible, LISTROS works towards a change in consciousness in Ethiopia and seeks to do away with clichés about Ethiopia in Germany.
